Things
about Dad that will always make me smile:
- Always being instructed before a trip that “It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.”
- After injuring oneself or some other mishap being asked “Well . . . did you learn anything?”
- At dinner, being told “It’s all going to the same place.”
- While standing in front of the TV, always being informed that “I have not yet gained the ability to see through you.”
- While talking over the TV or making too much noise always being told to “Listen, Listen, Listen!”
- The use of the word yonder
- Curious Cosby-like dance moves
- I drop it you pick it up game from the home videos
- Everything can always be turned into a lesson about the gospel . . . even golf.
- The ability to build/fix anything
- Daddy-daughter dates
- Pulling out splinters
- Being so glad when daddy came home, especially if mom was trying to comb out my hair.
- Learning that it’s better to do it right the first time.
- When looking for dad, he could often be found in his room with his glasses far down his nose reading the scriptures.
- Basketball
- Camping trips
- Knowing that everyone knows and likes him.
- Waving at strangers in the car
- Remembering his childhood stories like the one armed man and kick the can.
- The waterfall
- Always doing the right thing and being faithful to the gospel
- Magnifying his priesthood and callings
- Never hearing him argue or fight with mom.
- “Naw, I’m gone drink the juice . . . “
- Jerry Clower . . . Wooooo-shoot-that-thing!
- Justin Wilson cooking on PBS . . . it’s not onion . . . it’s unyawn.
- “This Old House” was actually our house with endless projects and renovations.
- It’s a Wonderful Life at Christmas
- Realizing that he was right, and our eyes were bigger than our bellies, but not wanting to admit it.
- Pretending to be asleep after car trips so he would carry me into the house.
- Getting thrown to the ceiling
- Cleaning the church building
- Getting a room made in the house especially for me
- Fishing trips
- Walking to the creek when we were young.
- Feeling safe
- Shooting snakes
- Building tree-houses
- Knowing that I could always get a Father’s blessing if I needed it . . . even late at night when he was already ready for bed.
And the list goes on . . . Thanks, Dad.
- Love you forever!
