Half the Sky is a new documentary series that will be airing on PBS this fall. It is a series which exposes many of the hardships that women still face with respect to freedom, education, healthcare and independence. One of the women featured, Jane Ngoiri, is a Kenyan dressmaker who came from nothing, but with a microloan has changed her life and the lives of her children. She has now been able to send them all to school for the first time. Jane takes used dresses and turns them into children’s clothing.
Ms. Doyle, a woman from Hampton Bay, heard about Jane’s story and rallied her community into action to support her. She collected 150 dresses to send away, including her own wedding dress. With this donation, Jane will have plenty of dresses to keep her busy and her business flourishing for quite some time.

America

Today, at my new job, we were presented with a proposal to include a new documentary in our programming. It is about the slavery, trafficking and cruelty to women that exists in this modern world and what we can do  to fix it. It is based on the book entitled, Half the Sky. It gives real life stories told from the perspective of some of these women and it really makes the issue potent and real. Reading about their message and seeing some of their videos and the organizations they partner with has really affected me. The celebration of our nation's independence was just a few days ago, and it makes me appreciate even more the country that we live in. I do believe that we can always be better than we are (especially now), but relative to what other people in other countries go through on a day to day basis, we really do have it good. We are so blessed to live here. But, at the same time, it's hard to remember that in the midst of all of our own struggles and political issues that threaten to derail what America stands for. We should do more to make sure that we are standing up for what makes this such a beautiful and wonderful place to live in. We should resist the attack on our freedoms, we should defend what is right and what is sacred and we should be relentless in our struggle to uphold our founding principles so we can remain the example to others and inspire change. http://www.halftheskymovement.org/

Hallelujah, amen! It's time to elevate civil rights to civil responsibilty.

Why am I a black conservative? The better question is why aren't you!?!
Some of what is said in this video excerpt is really great: The champions of the civil rights movement of the past are out dated. We're grateful for their contribution, but Sharpton and Jackson need to be replaced. It’s time to elevate civil rights to civil responsibility. As far as results in the black community go, all we have is degradation. What are we bringing to the fight? What are we going to do differently? We’ve been supporting failed liberal policies for over 50 years. Democratic leaders have gotten us nowhere. They don’t want us to look at the results. They want us to look at what they promise us. Nothing is getting better; it continues to get worse. We need to stop penalizing success and the small business sector. Black father's need to be better. We need to be better educated. Etc . . .

Happy Father's Day.
